De-Stickering

Posted on January 20, 2022February 6, 2022 by Michael Kurt

Removing all the various interior and exterior decals, warning labels and placards required way more effort than I would have originally thought. Many of the decals were composed of different materials, including plastic, paper and foil and different adhesives making it a multi-step process. I used a combination of heat gun, razor blade, plastic scraper and scrub pad combined with liberal applications of Goop and SimpleGreen.

Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, the city removed many of the fire department related stickers from the outside of the module as well as the driver and passenger doors as part of the decommissioning process. I say unfortunately because it does not appear to have been done with any amount of care. The driver’s door got the worst of it as they used some kind of abrasive wheel that ate through the sticker, the paint and down into the metal. In the short term I’m going to sand down the damage, prime it and paint it white. Eventually I may have the red stripes redone on the doors just so it looks better.

For now I’m going to leave the large red stripes in place. They’re not awful to look at and I would probably do more damage taking them off. They are made of similar high visibility reflective material that are used on road signs.
